The new release from the Lincolnshire duo Dip Your Ghosts (DYG) teaming up with songwriter and virtuoso musician Sam Varlow brings something of the times with ‘You’re there, I’m here’. I suspect there will be an avalanche of introspective and isolationist themed muses hitting us all next year from a spectrum of artists bringing to bear their lockdown fruits of labour, perhaps forced labour in some genres as the live gig cheques stopped coming in and the only touring to be had was back and forth between kitchen and lounge via the garden, if you’re lucky enough to have one! Angst and soul searching could be one tranche alongside sanguine tinged pop to give us some 2021 sugar coating. Intentional or not there is a mood of not so splendid isolationism scattered across the wonderfully choreographed vocals from Varlow on this latest release from DYG. Where there’s melancholy to be found in the deeply submerged pulse of a lonely man’s heartbeat there is also just enough pertness in Varlow’s vocals to keep the mood above water as drowning in over indulged melancholy is not 4 minutes anyone wants to flirt with too much right now. “You’re there I’m here” offers up a gorgeous glimmer of hope and gloominess in the same equal measure with an ear teasing DYG mix that interweaves a smorgasbord of electronic and organic musical instrumentation that cracks open new frontiers for both DYG and Varlow to forge something special. This is pretty much guaranteed to assuage any fears of lockdown anxiety, if only for 4 precious minutes!
